Figureheads of the Royal Navy ReviewDear Mr Pulvertaft.
I just receivered you book, Figure heads of the Royal Naval in hopes of understanding HMS Alfred figure head and carvings even more. I under took building a model of her from the NMM plans and have been working on her for last ten to eleven years.
I was hoping that there was more info on her and other ships sterns, which would help our understand on who the figures represent. Doing a detailed book on the rest of the carvings on the ship would probably take a much larger book then you have here. Who knows sir, maybe you just might be the one to under take this and do one on stern carvings of the Royal Navy ships of the Sailing era. One I would stand in line for. This is sadly missing part on them in library's, and much needed, to bring them to life in this day and age. Any way after reading up to page 59, you have a drawing of the figure head of Alfred and was happy to see him there and was for sure more info was writtern in your book on him and the other carvings on the ship.
After reading what you wrote on him, left me a little on the down side. You said on page 60, that he is wearing a crown and holds a mace of office which I total agree with. But the next couple of items, leaves me confused. You wrote that in the trail boards, that the carvers, added cakes and a harp, which I do not see, so can you please tell me were these items are.
What I see is a lanthorn, that Alfred invented and books that were part of the ones that he had translated during his reign. The part about the cakes and harp that you wrote,I have read this, but just don't see those item's on the trail boards, or any place else on the ship. The only other item that is on the trail board is a slight tear in the plan, between the lanthorn and the books. Look fwd to a discussion on this. I have enjoyed reading your book very much and have also order you other book, which should be here tomorrow, the Warship Figureheads of Portsmouth. Should be good addition to my small library. Thank you.
