History of the Navy of the United States of America ReviewAmazing. I really hadn't been conscious of Cooper's early naval career. His book is chock full of first-hand, detailed discussions of ship handling and design, with insights on officers' character by a man who knew them personally and professionally! Wow, what a resource! I read for the first time about many, many incidents that have otherwise escaped the notice of historians. The discussions of ships' ratings, and the tactical thought behind designs of ships and their gun types and positioning, and of comparable weight of broadsides between different navies, is unique as far as I know. And, of course, the quality of the writing is superb.History of the Navy of the United States of America Overview
