Doctor in the Navy ReviewStrange as it might seem, conscription in the UK (called National Service) was not introduced until 1945 and was abolished in 1963 since when the British armed forces have, more or less, always been fully recruited. For some, this period of 2 years compulsory military service was seen as a chore - something to be questioned, perhaps even fought, at every opportunity. For others it was a chance to travel to exciting places and do stimulating things before being demobbed and settling down to a more humdrum existence of trying to earn a living as a civilian.
For Bill Yule, it came just as he had completed a six-year medical degree and one year as a houseman allowing him to view his forthcoming time in uniform with great relish. Having decided on the Royal Navy, he soon found himself posted to "small ships abroad." Whereas larger naval vessels had their own doctor, detachments of much small ships based in foreign waters would often find themselves sharing a single doctor. It is, however, the sheer variety of duties these craft were required to perform, coupled with the travel to such places as Borneo, Fiji, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and more which gave the author a much better platform from which to enjoy this great adventure.
On the one hand he is able to describe how houses in the Middle East were so designed that all heat from fires (used for cooking) would disperse in such a way so as not to increase the ambient temperature of an already hot climate. Then, by complete contrast he recounts how his ship was required to detonate a certain number of depth-charges as part of overall training and, almost immediately, had to seek urgent repairs for self-inflicted damage. Elsewhere he describes being at sea under full speed during an horrific storm. At the foot of his bunk was a scuttle (porthole) which was a good ten feet (3m) above the sea on a calm day. On this occasion, however, he recalls how he could work out the angle of the ship's roll by the amount of time that scuttle was below the surface!!!
Altogether, so many adventures from which the author has drawn so many anecdotes making this book a thoroughly entertaining read.
