Who can resist looking at cutaway art of modern transport, well, probably half the population because they're ladies. For the male half this collection of Brit Royal Navy ships and aircraft should be fascinating looking. The eighteen cutaways are quite stunning and painted between 1996 and 2004 by Mike Badrocke, who clearly knows his stuff because this kind of work is incredibly difficult. All the more so because it has to be totally accurate and look credible, too. An interesting touch was adding figures to all the ships.
The eighteen cutaways are printed on one side fold-out pages and spiral bound. I assume this is to allow them to be easily removed and stuck on walls or framed. The paper is a good moderately thick art.
Wonderful, though all this artwork is I was rather disappointed with the layout because all the art could have been much bigger on the fold-out pages, so four stars. The art size seems to have been dictated by the text and huge headings on each page. With a bit more thought the images could have been much bigger and still accommodate all the text. As it is this wonderful artwork is left floating in plenty of white space surrounded in bland typography. It could all have looked much more exciting.
