I'm a voracious reader, and been around long enough to have read a lot of books, and this one is way, way up near the top of the list of my favorites. A very surprising history book which has such a scope as to give you insights into the various political leaders who shaped the debates, the minor ones that exerted larger influence, and takes time to trace the wandering course of events up all their important tributaries. While the personalities of Adams and Jefferson (down to his odd footwear when meeting visiting dignitaries) are described, the ship building process is detailed, and finally, the surprising ultimate influence the ships had on U.S. and foreign affairs.
