Frasier Island (Frasier Island Series, Book 1) ReviewEnsign Rachel Whitney is thrilled when she is assigned to Frasier Island, a remote, highly classified naval outpost under the command of the legendary Lieutenant George Hudson. With a burning drive to succeed born out of past trauma, Rachel's quick temper flares when she encounters immediate hostility from her enigmatic commanding officer. Armed with her newly-minted Christian faith, she determines to acquit herself well and attempts to stifle her unwanted attraction to George, in spite of the prickling tension that exisits between them. Unbeknownst to Rachel, George has scars of his own that led him to embrace the isolation offered by the Frasier Island assignment - it was the perfect chance for him to retreat from painful memories and risky relationships. However, when word of the precious secret the Navy guards on Frasier leaks out and hostile forces begin to threaten their lonely outpost, Rachel and George must set aside their differences and learn to trust each other in order to survive.
I began reading Frasier Island with some trepidation -- after all, Dee Henderson set the standard high for military-themed romantic suspense novels with her Uncommon Heroes series. However, Susan Page Davis has proven more than equal to the challenge -- Frasier Island announces Davis's presence in the romantic suspense genre with an explosive bang. She expertly balances the "romance" and "suspense" elements of the story, providing an altogether satisfying read. The plot crackles with suspense, but what kept me turning pages were the well-drawn characters. Rachel and George are so believably real and authentic, their every motivation and reaction credible, that they practically leap living and breathing from the page. Their actions, reactions, and motivations are clearly and realistically established. It's impossible not to become emotionally invested in these two and their budding relationship. Their romance is beautifully told and well-developed. The faith element is, for the most part, incorporated extremely well into narrative. That said, I would have liked seeing a little more of a "pre-Christian" Rachel as I think establishing that groundwork would have added a little welcome depth to her faith journey. But that's a relatively minor caveat in this otherwise fast-paced, enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
