You Wouldn't Want to Be in the First Submarine: An Undersea Expedition You'd Rather Avoid ReviewSubmarines aren't a new invention. In fact the first one was designed in the 16th century and an actual one wasn't built until 1620. Unfortunately, it went kerflooey in only three hours. During the Civil War the "Confederacy [wanted] to use the submarine to attack Union warships blockading the South," so men had to get cracking and work out the bugs. Of course the Union had the same idea. There was a smattering of Civil War Submarines, but Mr. Hunley had the best idea (or was it the worst?).
The H. L. Hunley, as you can see in the marvelous drawings in this book, had all the components of a submarine. It had snorkel tubes, deadlights, a rudder, crank handles, ballast tanks . . . well, let's just say Hunley tried to make it work. When the crew saw that vessel they must have been shocked. "That's not a boat-it's a tin can!" On August 29, 1863, they were ready to roll. Lieutenant Payne gave the order to move. But wait! Something was terribly wrong and "within seconds the Hunley [was] heading for the seabed! It was a scramble to get out of the submarine and not everyone made it. Would they ever be able to develop a decent working sub during the Civil War?
This book is a sure fire winner for the reluctant reader. The set up is similar to the graphic novel, but still has ample sections of text to read. If the reader becomes interested in the Civil War and technology through this book, I would suggest taking a look at "Mr. Lincoln's High Tech War," by Thomas Allen, a much more complex, but equally fascinating book. Your child or student probably wouldn't have wanted to be in the Hunley or any other sub in that era, but they'd probably love to learn about them!You Wouldn't Want to Be in the First Submarine: An Undersea Expedition You'd Rather Avoid Overview
