Go Navy, go ReviewThis book follows the standard Archibald formula for juvenile sports fiction. Jim Dorrance is a superb high school football player and his nickname is "Navy." After his father was killed in the battle of Midway in the Second World War, Jim has considered it his goal to attend the naval academy and star in football. However, when the expected appointment does not materialize, he becomes bitter.
He enlists in the navy, serving on the storied battleship Missouri where he saves a man's life at the risk of his own. Awarded a medal for bravery, the captain of the Missouri entreats him to apply once again to the naval academy. At first he declines but then changes his mind. His acceptance puts his life on a new course.
Jim finds his life as a plebe very difficult and while he is a star on the freshman team, he feels forced to quit the team to concentrate on his studies. After managing to pass all his courses, he rejoins the football team the following year and slowly begins to absorb the spirit and tradition of the navy. The book ends with his heroic actions in a season-ending victory over Army.
Like the best Archibald books, the ending is dramatic, so well written that it holds you until the climactic game is over. I consider Archibald's book, "Crazy Legs McBain" to be the best juvenile sports fiction book ever written. While this book is not as good, it is not that far behind.
