NRSV Go-Anywhere Compact Thinline Bible with the Apocrypha (Bonded Leather, Navy ReviewThis is about as good as it gets for Compact Thinline Bibles.
I'm going to keep the focus of this review on this book itself, so I'm not going to say much about the merits of this particular translation. I'm just going to say that the NRSV bible translation is very well regarded by church leaders, and that it is the preferred English translation of many, if not most, academic Biblical scholars.
The most important thing of any book is the readability of the type. This is a compact bible, so small fonts come with the territory. I don't know for sure, but comparing it to my ESV Deluxe Compact Bible, the size looks to be around 6.5. I don't know what font specifically it's set in, but I like it, especially because it doesn't look too crowded on the page. They gave a little extra space in between the lines so your eyes can see the page more easily. Also, while there is some "bleed-through" or "shadowing" of the text between the pages, it is not so bad and is a lot better than some of the other thinline and compact bibles I've seen. The print is a touch on the light side, but overall, it's really well done. I wouldn't recommend this for long bouts of reading, but if you are looking for a bible you can leave in your bag in case you need to look something up, or if you need to read it on the bus, this is a good one.
As far as the content goes, this book contains the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical Books. The publishers have included headings above the chapters, making the text easier to look through (the Oxford editions of the NRSV don't have them). They also included 4 maps at the end of the book. There are translators' notes at the bottom of the page, but there are no cross references included.
Unfortunately, there is no Concordance at the back of the book. They probably left it out in the interests of economizing space. (A portable, but somewhat larger, NRSV bible that includes the Apocrypha and a concordance is the "Go Anywhere Bible with the Apocrypha"--ISBN 978-0061231216.) They also left out the table of weights and measures.
Dimensions-wise, the book is small enough to easily fit in the hand (and my hand is smaller than average). The trim size is 6.25" by 4". Including the cover, it is about 6.6" long, and 4.2" wide, and a little over 0.75" thick.
Aesthetically, it looks like a really nice, traditional bible. The cover is made of dark navy, bonded leather, and the page edges are evenly spray painted silver. The binding is sewn, and not glued. They also included 1 ribbon marker (2 would have been nice).
As far as flexibility goes, I bought mine from a brick and mortar store, so it was already quite flexible when I got it. I don't know how flexible it will be right out of the box, but mine has some give to it, and doesn't feel too rigid. Also, the paper is spray painted well. I got a bible from another publisher once, and they had spray painted the page edges poorly, making the pages stuck together. So when I opened the book and tried to read it, the pages crinkled, and kept making crunching noises whenever I opened and closed it). No such problems here.
My only wish is that the publishers had given me the option of purchasing a copy with an imitation leather cover, like Trutone or Nutone. I really love the dimensions of this book, but I don't like actual leather-covered books.
The bottom line: Despite its drawbacks, this is a very high quality bible. If you are looking for a compact bible that includes the Apocrypha, I highly recommend this one.
Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful to you.
