Fairmile Ships of the Royal Australian Navy - Volume 1 - the Fairmile Association ReviewThe Fairmile ships were the small ships of the British and Australian navies. They were commissioned on the outbreak of the Second World War to fill an important role in navies that believed that size mattered. The Fairmiles were seen as having an important anti-submarine role, but they were very versatile.
In England, Albert Macklin was considered the father of the Fairmiles because they were constructed under licence to his Fairmile Marine Company. The advantage of the Fairmiles was that they could be constructed in prefabricated parts and then assembled.
In Australia the Fairmiles were used for convoy escort, anti-submarine warfare, survey, special ops, rescuing plane crews, and preparing beaches for beach assaults.
