What Kind of Job Is This, For a Nice Jewish Boy: Memoir of a Rabbi and a Navy Chaplain ReviewWhile this book was not what I thought it would be, it was interesting reading. I figured it would be about the happenings and assistance a chaplain gives the enlisted men and officers in the military, but this book was more just about the rabbi himself and his ascent in rank and various billets and relationships with other chaplains, etc.I thought it would take us right into various crisis or counseling of the sailors and Marines. None of that. A lot of information about his family, which is nice. CPT Apple does seem to be a bit puffed up, but I guess he's a very proud man. He did accomplish a lot. I didn't exactly see where a chaplain does much for the spiritual lives of the military men except to lead worship services. It seemed to be a lot of getting meetings together and organizing this and that. It's just that a read a book about a doctor on an aircraft carrier and he talked about all the experiences he had and I thought this book would be the same. But there are no personal stories of sailors or Marines being helped through their times of need. I don't see how a Jewish chaplain can be much good to a Christian sailor. The advice except for ethical or moral would be lacking and incomplete. Certainly a chaplain in a combat situation would have much more to tell. What Kind of Job Is This, For a Nice Jewish Boy: Memoir of a Rabbi and a Navy Chaplain OverviewHave you ever wondered what it is like to be a rabbi? If you have, then this book is for you! Rabbi Apple, with humor and openness, describes his childhood, youth, and what influenced him to become a rabbi. He is candid about his life in three congregational pulpits and his long career as a Navy chaplain. Fortunately for many people, Rabbi Apple never listened to his mother when se kept telling him, “What kind of job is this for a nice Jewish boy?"
