THE HUNT FOR BIN LADEN- The New York Times Bestseller- 500+ Pages ReviewI loved the first book and wrote a review for Soldier of Fortune Magazine in 2003. The original book was great and made the New York Times bestseller list in days. Back then, although it was the only insider story of the liberation of Afghanistan, by necessity, certain facts were changed and operational details held back. This new version was a pleasure to read again and little was held back in the sweeping reality of the text. It is all there: the pain, the suffering, the fear, the courage, the sardonic morgue humor of war, the strength somehow found in its jaws - and the honor in fighting the good fight.
The story is told in the words of the people that were there and with access to those that commanded the first Special Forces teams to land in the Afghan deserts and mountains. The updated Kindle e-book shadows the original with more than 75 new pages and over 425 pages of revisions and updates; including the secret details and names that were withheld years ago. Of equal importance is the revelation that the original book was not written by a journalist and writer, but by a highly controversial Green Beret who spent nine months fighting the Taliban and al-Qaida immediately after 9/11 and another seven years in Afghanistan hunting bin Laden and his terrorists.
As a retired Special Forces Master Sergeant, I especially enjoyed hearing about my fellow NCOs that did the heavy lifting. The stories of Master Sergeant John Bolduc leading a 12 man Green Beret team in Northern Afghanistan against tens of thousands of Taliban fanatics, Captain Mark Nutsch leading his team on horseback to liberate the Taliban stronghold of Mazar Sharif, Captain Jason Amerine, Master Sergeant Jefferson Davis, and their team decimating the Taliban in Mullah Omar's own village, and Captain Smith leading TEXAS 17 to seize the Kandahar airfield are so vivid and so amazing that you can't put it down.
Although it is a book about the Green Berets, and only the Green Berets, it does a great job including the Air Force Combat Controllers fighting alongside them, Delta Force in Tora Bora, the CIA with bags of cash to support the Green Berets, and the Navy SEALs doing their job, and later killing bin Laden.
