Manning the New Navy: The Development of a Modern Naval Enlisted Force, 1899-1940 (Contributions in American History) ReviewManning the New Navy is an insightful look at the navy as it evolved from the aftermath of the Spanish American War to the navy that was to face Japan and Germany in the first few months of World War II. My grandfather entered the navy in 1911 so this is a great way for me to learn more about his navy and not the navy of the admirals of the time. My grandfather died when I was seven so I missed being able to hear his sea stories and learn from him what his life was like. This is about as good an opportunity to learn about the "new navy" as there is short of talking to the dwindling number of veterans of this era of the navy's existence.
