U.S. Navy, The (Pb) (Defending Our Country) ReviewPart of the "Defending Our Country" series of books, "The US Navy" is a fine book for anyone, especially anyone young, who is beginning to learn about the US Navy. It was published in 1993 by The Millbrook Press and is jointly credited to Corinne J. Naden and Rose Blue. It is 64 pages long.
I bought my copy of this book, a library hardcover, on 10-5-2010 for $0.50, it having been retired from the County of Henrico, Tuckahoe Library's inventory.
Regarding the ships it depicts or mentions-
USS Badger (FF-1071) was decommissioned in 1991 and struck from the Navy roster on 1-11-1995.
USS Mississippi (CGN-40) was decommissioned and struck on 7-28-1997.
USS Wisconsin (BB-64) was decommissioned on 9-30-1991 and struck on 3-17-2006.
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) is still in service as of 2010.
USS Kentucky (SSBN-737) is still in service as of 2010.
USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) was decommissioned on 8-1-2007.
USS Midway (CV-41) was decommissioned on 4-11-1992 and struck on 3-17-1997.
USS Adroit (MSO-509) was decommissioned on 12-12-1991 and struck on 5-8-1992.
USS Princeton (CG-59) is still in service as of 2010.
USS Constitution is still in service as of 2010.
Seeing that list, in which more than 5 of the listed ships are no longer in Navy service, you can get a pretty good idea of how much has happened since this book was published in 1993 and how, in many details, how out-of-date it has become.
Much of the history it covers is still the same despite the passage of time, and despite so many ships entering and leaving Navy service since 1993 the Navy's purpose is little different.
This is an old book, and its age shows plenty. It is meant as a children's book, and that shows plenty as well. But despite its various shortcomings, this is an enjoyable and informative book for anyone who is beginning to learn about the US Navy.U.S. Navy, The (Pb) (Defending Our Country) Overview
