Royal Navy's Reserves in War and Peace 1903-2003 ReviewThis is an excellent work on a military subject, not often written about, from a famous naval author. This book documents in a chronological format the various organizations that comprised what eventually became known as the Royal Navy Reserve. It reviews the history of the 'old' RNR (professional Merchant Navy seamen) and the RNVR (volunteer naval officers and men and, later, women). The author documents their funding, training, organizational challenges, and full-time activation as sailors in wartime. The author uses a significant number of photos in addition to the well written text. Also listed are the awards of the Victoria Cross and the George Cross to members of the Naval Reserve. My interest in this book was heightened by some reading I had done on the actions of Admiral Sir Max Horton, RN, proceeding World War II with respect to the very effective activation and use of the Royal Navy Reserve in a time of an extreme national emergency. This work should be valuable to anyone interested in naval subjects. It will be especially interesting to those who have knowledge of the reserves or who have served as a citizen-sailor reservist. A similar historical book does not exist for the U. S. Navy Reserve making this book recommended reading as background for its members.Royal Navy's Reserves in War and Peace 1903-2003 OverviewWant to learn more information about Royal Navy's Reserves in War and Peace 1903-2003?
