The more I've studied my history, though, the more I realize they're at least grounded in fact, if overdramatized for Hollywood.
Ray Burdeos' book covers the era after World War II, when every steward in every movie was a Filipino. I now know why that is the case.
The book covers the lives of several Filipino men who joined the Navy and Coast Guard in the middle of the twentieth century. They all went on to lead typical service careers, in the end retiring as chief boatswain's mates, warrant officers, etc. But it's how they started their careers that's important to understand - as stewards, the only job open to them at the time - and how that role affected what they could and could not do in a military world that was supposed to open and non-discriminatory, but was far from it.Filipinos in the U.S. Navy & Coast Guard During the Vietnam War Overview
