Black Submariners in the United States Navy, 1940-1975 ReviewIf you were to Google "Black Submariners" you'll see a question posed to Allexperts.com in March of 2006. The question: "To what extent did African-Americans participate in submarine warfare in WWII?" The reply: "...it is my understanding that there were no black submariners during WWII, in any role." Like so much of history as concerned the role of Blacks, much has been omitted, forgotten, erased. As a submarine/military buff it was I who posed that question in March of 2006. And it is with great astonishment and pride to learn of the role black submariners did indeed play in the defense of our country in WWII. Thanks to Glenn A. Knoblock and his well researched, brave work we have the record of Blacks who not only played a role but braved slights and hardships unrelated to fighting the Japanese, in and out of uniform, above and below the sea, because of skin color, and yet counted in those thousands who gave the ultimate sacrifice on and below the fields of battle in the defense of the country they loved.
