This small, slender (90 pages) paperback, with no illustrations and without any scholarly pretensions such as footnotes or even a bibliography, gives a clear, concise account of what Royal Navy life for officers and crew was like two centuries ago. Even those of us who have bookshelves groaning under the weight of more detailed examinations of the topic (including Lavery's own superb "Nelson's Navy" and his "Jack Aubrey Commands") can enjoy reading this new book that distills the essence of the subject and presents it in a quick, readily understood manner.
