Hooligan Navy: A Short Story ReviewA quarter way in, as the characters developed, I began to enjoy Hooligan Navy. Young teenager Eve Johnson, a 'mousy' Radcliffe girl from a well to do family (but full of pluck), sets the pace in this 'Girls Own Adventure' type story. The relationship she develops with Mr Vern, an old rum-soaked sea dog, as they set sail looking for Nazi U boats as part of the Coastal Picket Patrol, is a delightful and interesting read. Highly original.Hooligan Navy: A Short Story OverviewWhen Eve Johnson, home from Radcliffe for the summer in 1942, witnesses a Nazi U-boat torpedo a merchant marine ship off the old money coast of Nantucket, she is determined to do something to stop the attacks. The Coastal Picket Patrol, AKA the “Hooligan Navy," forms to scout for U-boats, and she tries to join, but they won't induct girls. Eve vows to scout on her own, even though her family, her high society friends, and even the Hooligan Navy itself tries to stop her.
