The German and the Austrian Navies: Volume Two: Die Deutsche und die Oesterreichische Marine: Band Nummer Zwei (Volume 2) ReviewMy husband and my brother purchased and read Marc Nonnenkamp's two books on the German and the Austrian Navies along with his book about Volkswagen. They were so impressed with the books and said I should read them too. I read the book on VW and thought it was outstanding - I'm no car nut like the guys are, but I really appreciated the insight the author gave into the reasons behind the problems in the economy. He talked about VW (a success) and about other car companies that did fail or which are failing - getting government bailouts and all that. He explained how these same issues affect entire countries - countries where people save a lot (like China) or countries that are head-over-heels in debt (like America today).
My review of the author's books on the German and Austrian Navies is similar to my review about his Volkswagen book. I'm no "ship nut" like the guys are, but I can certainly see how the author did an absolutely stellar job on his research. The interesting part to me is the history - he often explains bits and pieces of history and how they relate to particular ships and to the names of ships and boats. The really intriguing part you'll find in the author's second volume titled "The German and the Austrian Navies: Volume Two." He goes into such amazing detail not just about the history of Germany and Austria (the German speaking countries) but about all of Europe and really the entire world. He shows how everything is so closely linked, and how it has been right from the beginning. It's fascinating to see how just a few decisions changed history, and to read about how things could have been if people had made different choices at critical junctures. I'm also reading a book by Pat Buchanan called "Suicide of a Superpower" - about how America is literally destroying itself. Both authors raise many of the same related issues. Both authors trace back so many of today's problems to liberal establishment leaders like Woodrow Wilson and FDR. One perfect example that Marc Nonnenkamp gives is in the deliberate destruction of three great Christian monarchies after World War One - Catholic Austria-Hungary, Protestant Germany and Orthodox Russia. What ensued was total ethnic strife, dictatorships of the left and right and another world war 20 years down the road. After that came a costly Cold War against Russia and China.
The biggest loss of all was the Habsburg monarchy that ruled Germany to the time of Napoleon and then Austria-Hungary until 1918. This Holy Roman Empire functioned as the true and original "United Nations" where countries were linked through the noble houses of Europe and sent their ambassadors to the old German Reichstag in Regensburg in Bavaria. But the Holy Roman Empire never aspired to one world government, which is what the current UN is doing - to the detriment of free people everywhere.
The author's paternal grandfather served in the German Navy between the two world wars, and his books feature many photos of that service.
