U.S. Navy Flying Boats and Amphibians in World War II - Specials series (6095) ReviewOne of Squadron/Signal's new line of "Specials," Al Adcock's U.S. NAVY FLYING BOATS AND AMPHIBIANS IN WORLD WAR II is much, much more. It actually encompasses the immediate pre- and post-WW II period, therein furnishing the reader with a much wider historical survey. If your interest lies in Clippers, Catalinas, PBMs, Gooses, etc., you'll love Adcock's book. After a one-page history of the development of U.S. flying boats/amphibians, Adcock takes the reader on a company-by-company tour of American manufacturers of those unique flying machines. So, Boeing gets six pages; Consolidated Aircraft, 23; Douglas, 3; Grumman, 14; and on on. (The book runs to 80 pages).
It features over 200 nicely-captioned b&w photographs of USN/USMC/USCG and civilian machines, three color shots and eight pages of absolutely super Don Greer color profiles. (I've touted Greer's artwork for years but with good reason. Just take a look at the cover of this book; what an exquisite piece of aviation art)!
In short, Adcock's book is a real treasure trove for amphib/flying boat fans. Tons of pix, great color, a $16.95 price tag: you can't go wrong! Recommended.U.S. Navy Flying Boats and Amphibians in World War II - Specials series (6095) Overview
