Navy Diver: The Incredible Undersea Adventures of a Master Diver ReviewI happened onto this obscure and long out of print autobiographical piece and wasn't even sure I wanted to invest the time to read it but, as an old Navy vet and submariner, I thought it might be interesting. I read it. WOW!!
This guy (author Joseph Karneke) seems to have no ego, and has courage of biblical proportions (in Navy vernacular: His must be brass and the size of grapefruits).
Among his various military and career accomplishments, Karneke was a career U.S. Navy master diver, beginning his career shortly prior to WWII. The stories are true, and incredible. Trapped beneath a sinking ship and the harbor floor - Irradiated in the muddy bottom at Bikini atoll - Disarming mines under direct enemy fire - Deadly equipment malfunctions in the deep - Giving up and inhaling the muddy Potomac - Sharks - Disarming a live atomic weapon - Salvaging intelligence on a fresh Japanese battleship kill - and more and more. I've read action novels without near so much action.
Ghost writer Victor Boesen did an excellent job of helping Karneke tell his story. The humor is subtle and sometimes not so subtle. Sometimes it is laugh out loud (military veterans will especially have nostalgic moments).
Strangely, Karneke NEVER mentions family. There is NO profane language (how did he manage that one?!). Only a couple of passing allusions to women at all. Only a slight mention of the cold (which I am aware is often present and often intensely uncomfortable). When he mentions physical discomfort at all, it is usually in a situation where death is sniffing around nearby. No cynical shots at the Navy (notwithstanding a little humor at the expense of a ship's captain). A real patriot, and brave by anyone's measure. Quite a man and quite a storyteller.
