Making a Submarine Officer - A story of the USS San Francisco (SSN 711) ReviewI just finished this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. As a retired submarine sailor, Alex's reality spoke a lot of truths about some of the shortfalls of the sub community and how it falls on the sailors to pick up the slack when the hierarchy above thinks all that needs to be done is push a bit harder. Often it is the submarine sailor that does pick up the slack and just continues to push, like Alex did.
And also like Alex, a lot of us grew from the experience and have become stronger individuals and leaders as a result of our submarine experience.Making a Submarine Officer - A story of the USS San Francisco (SSN 711) OverviewFrom October 2002 to September 2005, the crew of the USS San Francisco (SSN 711), a nuclear fast-attack submarine, took an incredible and gut-wrenching journey through 3 homeports, 2 missions vital to national security, 2 dry-dockings, dozens of leaders, and the worst submerged grounding in the history of the US Navy that did not result in the loss of the vessel. The author's journey as a young Naval Officer took him through the best and worst of these times, and his story carries lessons for military officers, leaders, and managers everywhere.
