In the Company of Strangers ReviewThis is the story of the author's first day in Aviation Candidate Officer's School (ACOS), Pensacola, Florida. His training begins before he enters the building as three officers meet him at the top of the steps yelling commands he doesn't understand. By the time they allow him to walk through the door, he is confused, terrified and physically uncomfortable--and the worst is yet to come.Jim Haffner has a wonderful talent for drawing readers into his perspective and leading them to experience a wide range of often conflicting emotions. I laughed at his disconcerting predicaments, worried about his brush with heat stroke, felt his anxiety, frustration, anger and, at the end of the day, his sense of accomplishment.
I give this short book my highest recommendation and look forward to reading others in the series.
In the Company of Strangers OverviewIn April 1987, 242,288,918 people were living in the United States. Out of that number, 23 were invited to begin training in Aviation Officer's Candidate School (AOCS) in Pensacola, Florida in April 1987. AOCS is a military training program designed to train naval aviators and graduate “the best of the best." I was one of those 23. I wake up early on a cold day in April to report to the AOCS after graduating 3 weeks earlier from the University of Toledo. I've spent years preparing mentally and physically for the program which is described as one of the most difficult programs in the US military. When I arrive I am immediately immersed in learning how to march, stand, and eat like an AOCS Candidate. In the initial physical tests I am near the top of the class and I'm selected to become Class Leader. My preparation is beginning to pay off. This is part 2 of my story and picks up as I arrive at AOCS and follows me on my first day of training as I "sweat" my way through the first 12 hours in the barracks. I am constantly being tested by my instructors and I am starting to make mistakes. As I copy the text into my "Poopy Gouge" I hear a loud noise moving down the hall towards my room. What is that noise? Is this another test? I flinch when the sound echoes off of the empty hall. It is getting closer. Should I hide? As the noise nears my door I'm forced to make a decision.
